Petal to the Metal

By Christina Marie Draper

This season, designers take on spring’s seminal fashion trend with unrestrained fervor. There are myriad ways to wear designer blooms, and we’ve called out six of our favorite looks to inspire your wardrobe.

Stella McCartney Gabriela Dress, made from repurposed printed stock from 9 past ready to wear collections.

Take this whimsical silhouette of cascading florals and tassels from Stella McCartney, for instance. As one of the preeminent sustainable fashion brands, McCartney takes spring renewal to another level by creating a striking dress made of repurposed flower-printed fabrics from previous collections.

Dolce & Gabbana Camellia-print poplin midi-dress, small Devotion bag and crystal-embellished pumps.

Meanwhile designers like Oscar de la Renta, Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana offer ultra-feminine dresses with structured bodices and full skirts fit for an intimate gathering in the garden. Dolce & Gabbana’s flirty and feminine camellia-print dress gets an extra dose of glamour paired with a metallic Devotion bag and crystal-embellished D’orsay pumps.

Miu Miu satin Sablé dress.

Miu Miu lends the trend a youthful energy, with a floaty minidress topped with a contrasting wide collar. This look does double duty, capturing the season’s emphasis on collars and shoulders, which we’ve seen everywhere from Gucci to Versace.

Marni Rainbow Flower-printed poplin shirt and skirt, Trunk bag and white wedge sandals.

If floral prints just seem a little too sweet for your taste, look to brands like Erdem or Marni who bring a little edge to the garden. With bolder graphic florals, these looks can bring out the flower child in anyone—especailly when paired with a chunky, modern sandal.

It’s not all dresses and skirts. Matching separates like Rosie Assoulin’s pajama-inspired set in a painterly floral is a great way to embrace the trend—especially if WFH is on your agenda. We also loved similar silhouettes at Isabel Marant, Carolina Herrera and Dries Van Noten.

Salvatore Ferragamo Papavero-print reversible wind jacket, silk shorts, signature t-shirt, Gancini sneaker and sunglasses.

Salvatore Ferragamo keeps it casual with a sporty wind jacket and smartly tailored shorts. Pulling the look together with a coordinating graphic t-shirt and embellished trainers, Ferragamo proves there’s more than one way to get dressed up.
