In the late 1960s when creativity was still a valuable currency, two young artists met— Patti Smith, the performer and Robert Mapplethorpe, the photographer. In Just Kids (HarperCollins), Smith recounts their brief love affair and amazing friendship that spanned decades. She chronicles their time in the center of the New York art scene in the late ‘60s and ‘70s, when they spent much of their time living in the famous and infamous Hotel Chelsea.
